"A Smile to Help Me Express Who I Really Am"

Cody felt that others perceived him in a way that he didn't see himself, because of his reluctance to show his smile. Dr. Lynn Jones' minimally invasive Bespoke Veneers were the right solution to help Cody achieve the desire result: a handsome, confident smile.

by patient Cody B.

My teeth were permanently discolored, and I felt like that was the first thing everyone noticed. For almost as long as I can remember, I’ve been reluctant to letting my natural smile shine through.

 Cody natural before

I Felt Stuck With The Smile I Had.

When I was a child, I was prescribed frequent regimens of tetracycline that permanently stained my teeth. I was periodically teased about the color of my teeth, and I quickly became self-conscious about my natural smile.

When I was around 12 or 13, my parents brought me to Dr. Jones to have my teeth laser whitened because they knew how much it bothered me. The whitening helped, but as predicted, in my case, could not eliminate the stains on my teeth.  Since there was nothing else that could be done at the time, I felt stuck with the smile I had.

It Impacted My Social Opportunities.

My reluctance to smile didn’t go away when I became an adult. As a result, people viewed me as a much more "serious" person than I actually am, because I wouldn't always smile in scenarios where it was appropriate to do so. This made me sad, knowing that people who didn't know me very well would walk away with this view of me that I didn't feel matched who I really was. I feel like it impacted my social opportunities.

Dreaming of Veneers

I had always wanted veneers, because I knew that it was a permanent solution to this problem. Aside from the teeth that I had always wanted - I wanted the confidence to smile without being painfully aware of the staining on my teeth. Several years went by. Sometimes, it’s easy to forget or to delay doing something about a problem that has been bothering you forever.

Why Dr. Lynn Jones?

Since my parents had chosen and trusted Dr. Lynn Jones to help me to whiten my smile when I was younger, when the time, she was the only dentist who specialized in cosmetic dentistry that I was aware of. Since I considered veneers an investment in my future, I did some research online, and I found overwhelmingly positive reviews for Dr. Jones and her cosmetic dentistry.

Dr. Jones’ office is located in an area where a dentist performing mediocre work probably wouldn't last very long. These factors, and knowing that she had been in business for as long as she had, led me to believe that going with Dr. Jones gave me the best chance at achieving the desired result with my investment.

Cody came to us with permanent discolorations on his teeth that were not uniform in color or tone. Whitening treatments could lighten the stains, but they were too deeply embedded for any whitening treatment to erase them completely.

Other than the cosmetic stains, Cody’s teeth were perfectly healthy. As I examined Cody’s case I noticed that his smile aesthetic could be improved with micro changes in the size and shape of his smile profile.

In addition to providing an "instant whitening" effect the same day they are applied, Dr. Jones' minimally invasive Bespoke Veneers are custom designed and crafted to correct any other size or symmetry problems, create more volume, or with micro-changes, add "presence," which in Cody’s case, we felt would be a perfect and yet, nearly undetectable enhancement to his natural smile.

Our goal was that only Cody’s family and closest friends would notice that his stains were gone and that his smile was more attractive, never discerning exactly how or why his personal presentation was “somehow” enhanced, positively affecting every interaction and photograph.

Dr. Jones' Bespoke Veneers Enhance & Protect Your Smile

We chose my minimally invasive Bespoke Veneers for Cody's treatment -- the same kind often used by executives preparing for a high profile career. Any dentist can fit veneers made from average materials that fit "the average person." Many patients don't realize that choosing a cosmetic dentist is similar to choosing a medical specialist versus a general practitioner. An accredited cosmetic dentist has much deeper training and experience in bio-mechanical engineering, aesthetic design, artisan craftsmanship and materials used to create the veneer that will affect their look and how long they will last. The final consideration should simply be which accredited cosmetic dentist one feels comfortable in working with to create the smile you dream of wearing every day.

Our Bespoke Veneers are custom crafted for the needs, desifres and even the individual personality or desired look for every patient. Micro aesthetic design improvements are possible with veneers that can enhance the appearance and presentation of almost every person's smile. Using the latest in computer design technology, I work collaboratively with laboratories known for excellence in engineering, craftsmanship and precision, and how have a history of creating beautiful work to my rather exacting specifications, using only the finest materials with the goal of creating results that exceed my patients' expectations.

Minimally invasive Bespoke Veneers either require no drilling, or very minimal shaping of the patient’s natural teeth. They are thin, durable, metal-free and custom made to top a natural healthy tooth, not replace it. My minimally Invasive Bespoke Veneers are made from a single block of premium-grade ceramic that has been harvested for its toughness, durability and opaque qualities, which has made it considered a breakthrough in dental technology. The result is a smile that is tough and enduring but delicate and natural in appearance.

I collaborated with Cody, listening to his needs, sharing possibilities, giving counsel and making recommendations to help him choose the best options for him, until we came to a shared vision for his best smile.  Then, I presented him with images and asked him to choose from several designs I created that would give him a different look, feel and presence both in person and in photos.

I then crafted temporary veneers in the design, color palate, texture and finish of Cody’s choice to for him to wear out into the world for a short time to experience the look and feel that his custom veneers would offer, before he gave his final approval and we created the veneers that would help him to achieve his own vision for his best smile.

The Debut of Cody's New Smile

Cody Headshot

"My willingness to smile immediately came back, and I feel like that is increasing daily as I get more used to the fact that I actually do have nice teeth now. I have achieved the desired result.

I've noticed a change in my interactions with people - because I am more at ease, they seem to be more at ease.

Ultimately, this was about creating a change that I felt would assist me in expressing who I really am."

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Teeth whitening is a wonderful way to eliminate noticeable stains or discoloration, brighten your smile and change your overall look. Dr. Lynn Jones is the dentist Bellevue/Seattle teeth whitening patients trust for whiter, brighter and more beautiful teeth. Although it is widely known that modern teeth whitening is effective, its safety is often in question — perhaps because of the materials used to bleach and whiten the teeth. One query that commonly comes up among teeth whitening patients is whether the treatment is safe. In this blog post, Dr. Jones puts those worries to rest by explaining what teeth whitening involves and why in-office treatment is safe.

How Do I Know If I Have TMJ Disorder?

Although issues involving the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are common (affecting an estimated 10 to 30 million Americans), TMJ disorder is widely misunderstood. The TMJ is a complex joint since it both hinges and slides. Also, many of the symptoms of TMJ problems, such as headaches or earaches, can be misinterpreted as something else. Accurate detection and diagnosis is necessary, since the condition won’t improve or go away with time.

Here, Dr. Lynn Jones, a trusted Seattle/Bellevue dentist, shares a quick self-test for your TMJ; she also describes symptoms you should be aware of that could indicate a problem with the TMJ.

A Self-Test to Try

Here is a quick test to check your TMJ:

Place a finger over the joint just in front of your ear (that’s your TMJ) and slowly open your jaw wide. You should feel your TMJ moving.

Is it tender to the touch or sore?

Do you hear a clicking or popping sound when opening your jaw?

If you answered yes to either question, you might have a problem with your TMJ and should schedule an examination with Dr. Jones to get it checked out.

Symptoms that Could Indicate TMJ Disorder

Besides a clicking or popping sound and a soreness or tenderness in the jaw joint, there are other symptoms that could indicate a problem with the TMJ. While these symptoms are not mutually exclusive to TMJ, they should still be examined by a professional.

  • Pain in the face, jaw or neck
  • Headaches and ear pain
  • Stiffness in the jaw
  • Inability to completely open the jaw
  • Jaw gets “locked” in the open or closed position

The occasional headache or sore jaw usually does not mean that TMJ disorder is the culprit. However, if you experience these symptoms on a regular basis, especially in tandem, you should schedule an appointment with our dentist. Ignoring these signs could cause TMJ disorder to worsen to the point that it requires costly, extensive treatment or surgery.

Can Invisalign Help Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder in which the airway becomes obstructed during sleep, preventing oxygen from reaching the lungs, brain and other vital organs. A common symptom of sleep apnea is loud snoring, choking or gasping noises while sleeping. Someone with sleep apnea may stop breathing hundreds of times in a single night and when this happens, the brain senses the breathing cessation and briefly wakes the body up to reopen the airway. The repeated sleep disruptions can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness, affect cognitive function and cause other problems.

Because sleep apnea involves an airway obstruction in the mouth and throat, dentists are often at the forefront of detection and treatment. Dr. Lynn Jones sees patients with sleep apnea at her Bellevue/Seattle dental practice and offers a range of solutions. Since Invisalign has been mentioned as a possible treatment solution, Dr. Jones wanted to offer her thoughts on the matter.
